What is AC Three Phase Motor

AC Three Phase Motor is a type of AC induction motor that deals with a phase supply when diverged from the single-phase induction motor where the single-phase supply is supposed to work. The three-phase supply current makes an electromagnetic field in the stator winding which prompts the production of the torque in the rotor bending of the three-phase induction motor having a magnetic field. Next, we will be Going Through Faraday's Law of Induction Motor.

Benefits of AC Three Phase Motor

Reliability

These motors are known for their strong and solid activity. They have a with less moving parts, decreasing the probability of mechanical disappointment.

High Power Output

3-phase motors can convey high power yield, making them appropriate for modern applications that require significant mechanical power.

Cost-Effective

AC Three Phase Motor are for the most part financially savvy to produce and keep up with, adding to their far reaching use in different industries.

Efficiency

AC Three Phase Motor are exceptionally effective. They convert a high level of electrical power into mechanical power, making them reasonable for a great many applications.

Smooth Operation

These motors give a smooth and consistent activity because of the steady power conveyance from the three phase.

Low Maintenance

Contrasted with different types of motors, AC Three Phase Motor have lower support necessities. They are self-starting and don't need extra starting devices.

Types of AC Three Phase Motor

Squirrel Cage Induction Motor

The shape of this rotor is resembling the shape of the cage of a squirrel. Therefore, this motor is known as a squirrel cage induction motor. The construction of this type of rotor is very simple and rugged. So, almost 80% of the induction motor is a squirrel cage induction motor. The rotor consists of a cylindrical laminated core and has slots on the outer periphery. The slots are not parallel but it is skewed at some angle. It helps to prevent magnetic locking between the stator and rotor teeth. It results in smooth operation and reduces the humming noise. It increases the length of the rotor conductor due to this the rotor resistance is increased.

Slip-ring or Wound Rotor Induction Motor

Slip-ring induction motors are also known as wound rotor motor. The rotor consists of a laminated cylindrical core with slots on the outer periphery. The rotor winding is placed inside the slots. In this type of rotor, the rotor winding is wounded in such a way that, the number of poles of rotor winding is the same as the number of poles of the stator winding. The rotor winding can be connected as a star or delta.End terminals of rotor windings are connected to the slip-rings. So, this motor is known as a slip-ring induction motor. The external resistance can easily connect with the rotor circuit through the slip-ring and brushes. And it is very useful for controlling the speed of the motor and improving the starting torque of the three-phase induction motor.

Application of AC Three Phase Motor

Lifting industries

Due to high resistance and commendable torque rate, lifting industries are the main application of three phase motors. Slip Ring motors can carry a high load without causing over-heating. Cranes, accelerators, elevators, hoists, and conveyors are the common 3 phase motor uses in the lifting industry.

Chemical industry

Slip ring induction motors are also widely used in the high-volume compressors and crushers in petroleum refineries and the gas extraction industry. These motors have high load capacity; therefore, the chemical industry is the major application of 3 phase induction motors.

Electrical equipment

Another significant use of slip ring three phase induction motors is electrical equipment. These motors allow external resistance with a high PF rating; thus, used in generators, turbines, winders, and dynamos.

Rolling mills

Slip-ring motors have a wide range of applications in rolling, turntable, and rotating machinery. Rolling mills utilize these motors because wound-type motors offer high starting torque and efficiency.

Medical equipment

The slip-ring motors are also used in the medical industry such as MRI, and CT scan equipment, due to their exceptional power and analog transmission.

AC Three Phase Motor Components

Stator Frame
The stator frame is the outer part of the motor. The function of the stator frame is to provide support to the stator core and stator winding. It provides mechanical strength to the inner parts of the motor. The frame has fins on the outer surface for heat dissipation and cooling of the motor. The frame is casted for small machines and it is fabricated for a large machine. According to the applications, the frame is made up of die-cast or fabricated steel, aluminum/ aluminum alloys, or stainless steel.

Stator Core
The function of the stator core is to carry the alternating magnetic flux which produces hysteresis and eddy current loss. To minimize these losses, the core is laminated by high-grade steel stampings thickness of 0.3 to 0.6 mm.These stampings are insulated from each other by varnish. All stampings stamp together in the shape of the stator core and fixed it with the stator frame.

Stator Winding
The stator winding is placed inside the stator slots available inside the stator core. Three-phase winding is placed as a stator winding. And three-phase supply is given to the stator winding. The number of poles of a motor depends on the internal connection of the stator winding and it will decide the speed of the motor. If the number of poles is greater, the speed will less and if the number of poles is lesser than the speed will high. The poles are always in pairs. Therefore, the total number of poles always an even number. The relation between synchronous speed and number poles is as shown in the below equation.

Rotor
As the name suggests, the rotor is a rotating part of the motor. According to the type of rotor, the induction motor is classified as Squirrel Cage Induction Motor
Phase Wound (Wound Rotor) Induction motor / Slip-ring Induction Motor.

What is the Difference Between Single Phase and AC Three Phase Motor

Power Usage

The advantage of a single-phase motor is that it uses less power to function. On the other hand, the three-phase motor is more powerful, with a power capacity of 1 ½ times that of the single-phase motor.

Reversible

The three-phase motor is reversible and can be used as a generator by turning mechanical energy into electrical energy. This means that it can create rotational motion on its own by flipping the polarity of the magnet as if moves from north to south. The flip causes a repelling action that creates a motor's motion.

Economics

Since a three-phase motor can efficiently transmit large amounts of electricity over large areas, it is more economical.

Durability

The three-phase motor lasts longer than the single-phase motor, making it more durable and cost-effective.

Consistency

Since the single-phase motor voltage rate can fluctuate and reduce the consistency of the power supply, the three-phase motor voltage is much more efficient.

Noise

Single-phase motors can be noisy, while three-phase motors make less noise when operating. Single-phase motors are used when less power is needed to minimize the auditory noise coming from equipment like an air conditioner.

Wearing protective safety gear
This safety gear may include grounding straps, gloves, and any other relevant protective gear for the environment.

Having all tools readily available
Some common diagnostic tools include ubiquitous multimeters, clamp-on ammeters, temperature sensors and oscilloscopes. Having these tools available will help you avoid leaving the motor unattended.

Disconnecting the motor from power
When you are ready, move the transformer’s motor disconnect switch to take it off of power. Be careful to make sure that the power is actually turned off — on some motors, the disconnect switch is the same as the on/off switch, so switching the disconnect switch to the on position will power the motor. Also, be sure to disconnect all equipment and wiring that is not going to be included in the testing process.

Discharge before and after testing
Before beginning testing and after each electrical test, be sure to discharge the motor, as it has an inherent amount of capacitance. This can be accomplished by shunting conductors to ground and each other before reconnecting.

Check the nameplate
The nameplate or motor specifications provide valuable information about the motor, such as the intended amperage of the motor. This information can be used to assess the health of the motor compared to its intended design.

Method of AC Three Phase Motor

Direct-on-line (DOL) starting
This is the most basic method of starting an induction motor. It involves simply applying full voltage to the motor terminals. This method is simple and reliable, but it generates high inrush current and high mechanical stress, which can lead to damage to the motor or other equipment.

Star-delta starting
This method involves starting the motor in a star-connected configuration and then switching to a delta-connected configuration after the motor has reached a certain speed. This reduces the starting current and torque, but it is not as efficient as other methods.

Auto Transformer starting
This method uses an auto transformer to reduce the starting voltage applied to the motor. This reduces the starting current and torque, but it is not as efficient as other methods.

Soft starter
A soft starter is an electronic device that controls the voltage applied to the motor during starting, reducing the starting current and torque. It is more efficient than other methods, but it requires additional equipment and control.

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Starting
A VFD is an electronic device that controls the frequency and voltage applied to the motor during starting, reducing the starting current and torque. It also allows for speed control during operation. It is more efficient than other methods, but it requires additional equipment and control.

FAQ

Q: Can a 3 phase motor be used as a generator?

A: Conversion into a 3-phase generator is a common application of 3 phase induction motor. A three phase synchronous motor can be used as a generator if we excite the rotor by an external source. We need to magnetize the stator winding to maintain synchronous speed. That is how the three phase motor will start working as a generator.

Q: How to 3 phase motor on a single phase?

A: A 3 phase motor uses a 3-phase power supply; however, running it on a single-phase power supply is not a very hectic task. To run three phase motor on a single-phase, you will need a VFD (variable frequency device). For this purpose, you will have to connect the single phase power to the input of VFD and three phase power to the output. After successful connection, the three phase induction motor will start running on a single phase supply.

Q: How to change the direction of a 3 phase induction motor?

A: Changing the direction of the motor is a very common practice to enable the different applications of 3 phase induction motor. To simply change the direction of a three-phase motor, you need to interchange any two phases of the motor. For example, you can connect the Y phase to the R phase and vice versa. In this way, the direction of magnetic fields will be reversed.

Q: What are the limitations of three phase AC motors?

A: The main disadvantage of the 3 phase ac motor is that in case one transformer fails, it will lead to a complete shutdown of the entire system. Also, the cost of repair for three phase ac motor is high compared to single phase ac motor.

Q: How to tell if a 3-phase motor is bad?

A: Phase to Earth Resistance: Take the insulation tester, using the same setting, and check each lead from phase to the frame of the motor. The minimum value of insulation resistance should be 1 megohm. If the value is less than 0.2 megohms, replace the motor.

Q: How to troubleshoot a 3-phase AC motor?

A: Check the input voltage from the AC power supply entering the soft starter or drive. Check the device's components for burned solder joints or loose connections, including the AC to DC converter, circuit board, DC filter, and the DC-to-AC inverter that provide the power to the motor. Check the motor itself.

Q: What happens if you wire a 3-phase motor wrong?

A: Overall, wiring a three phase motor with the wrong number of phases will lead to a motor that is electrically noisy, unbalanced, and with lower performance and efficiency. The motor is more susceptible to overload and its life will likely be shorter.

Q: Does a 3-phase motor need a capacitor?

A: A three-phase electric motor uses a three-phase power supply to convert electric energy into mechanical energy. It contains four wires (three hot wires and one neutral wire) and uses three alternating currents of the same frequency. Since it generates a rotating magnetic field, it does not need a capacitor for startup.

Q: Why does my 3-phase motor hum but not spin?

A: In a three-phase power supply, if one of the phases is lost (due to a blown fuse, for example), it's known as phase loss. Similarly, if there's a large difference in voltage between the phases, it's called phase imbalance. Both can prevent the motor from starting while causing a humming sound.

Q: What happens when a 3-phase motor loses a phase?

A: With a missing phase: the stator's magnetic field is no longer “rotating.” Instead, the magnetic field is expanding and contracting in a single physical plane. Consequently, the three-phase motor operates as a single-phase motor.

Q: What is a serious problem only to three-phase motors?

A: Explanation: A serious problem common only to three-phase motors is single-phasing. When a motor is single-phased, it loses its ability to generate the required magnetic field and can cause overheating, decreased efficiency, and potential damage to the motor.

Q: What is considered unbalanced on a 3-phase AC system?

A: Definition. Phase unbalance of a three-phase system exists when one or more of the line-to-line voltages in a three-phase system are mismatched. Three-phase power systems and equipment are intended to operate with phases (Lines) balanced.

Q: Why does my 3-phase motor keep tripping?

A: Circuit breakers and fuses trip for numerous reasons: undervoltage, incorrectly designed circuit breaker or fuses, too low a setting for the motor-protective circuit breaker, asymmetric three-phase current, short circuit on the motor, incorrect wiring or faulty electrical connections, worn or blocked pump, defective ...

Q: What causes a 3-phase motor to burn out?

A: Professional for High Quality Electric Motor… According to statistics, about 85% of the three-phase asynchronous motors used in production are electrical faults caused by winding burnout, and about 15% are structural and other faults. The causes of winding burnout are mostly phase loss or overload operation.

Q: Will an AC motor run without a capacitor?

A: You can, as there are several type that will run on AC without needing a starting capacitor. Shaded pole motors were mentioned in another answer, these are found in old electric clocks, and in small electric fans (table top or window, plus bathroom vent).

Q: Can a three-phase motor run without neutral?

A: A three-phase motor does not require a neutral wire because it operates on three-phase power, which provides three separate alternating currents that are 120 degrees out of phase with each other. This means that at any given moment, one of the three phases is always providing power to the motor.

Q: How to troubleshoot a three-phase motor?

A: Using a voltmeter, measure the voltage at the motor ter- minals. If the voltage is pres- ent and at the correct level on all three phases, the motor must be checked. If the volt- age is not present on all three phases, the incoming power supply must be checked.

Q: What happens if you run a 3-phase motor on single-phase?

A: Running a three-phase motor on single-phase power commonly results in compromised motor efficiency, increased heat generation, and potentially a shorter lifespan of the motor.Wye Motor Wiring Systems. Of all the three-phase motors that exist for industrial applications, they can all be simplified into either a Wye or Delta internal wiring system.

Q: Can a 3-phase motor run on only 2 phases?

A: A three-phase motor must be connected to the rated load voltage and load for proper working. If due for some reason, one phase of the motor gets disconnected, the motor will continue to run from the active 2-phase supply. This is called single phasing. The motor will continue to run with vibration and reduced speed.

Q: Why does my AC hum and buzz but doesn't turn on?

A: An AC unit humming but not turning on is often caused by a faulty capacitor, a tripped circuit breaker, or a malfunctioning compressor. When the AC capacitor fails, the fan motor does not receive power, resulting in a noticeable humming or buzzing sound.
