What is a DC motor?

A DC motor is an electric motor driven by direct current (DC). Most commonly, it uses a magnetic field to generate force that makes the motor rotate. Almost all electric motors have a similar mechanism, using electromechanical or electronic methods to periodically change the direction of the current in the motor.

DC motors were the earliest type of electric motor, powered by the DC lighting power supply systems of the time. DC motors have a wide speed adjustment range, achieved by changing the power supply voltage or adjusting the magnetic field strength. Small DC motors are used in tools, toys, and household appliances. AC commutator motors can be powered by DC and are lightweight brushed motors used in battery-powered tools or household appliances. Larger-power DC motors can power electric vehicles, elevators, and cranes, and are also used in steel rolling mill equipment. Due to advancements in power electronics, AC motors have largely replaced DC motors in many applications.
